The Legend of Pitcher Point, as related by old-timers, dates back to the early 1800's. During the period of Spanish rule in this area, law enforcement was spotty at best. With New Orleans fast becoming a trade center and with much shipping activity going on between that city and Mobile, pirates would hide out along our coast and under cover of night, board the ships anchored between the mainland and the offshore barrier islands, robbing crews. One such pirate, Captain Pitcher and his band of pirates, camped in an area west of Long Beach in the vicinity of present day Pitcher Point Avenue. The original cove where Pitcher and his men camp was visible until 1928, when the seawall was built and the cove was filled in with sand.
